Many people believe that abortion is an easy way out of having a baby, but what are the real costs? We will delve into what abortion actually is and what are the consequences. After knowing the various types of abortion and what actually happens to the fetus, it will be clear why abortion is barbaric.

Saline abortion- A saline solution is inserted into the uterus. The fetus swallows this saline solution which causes the fetus to die by “dehydration, brain hemorrhage, and convulsions” according to prolifeaction.org. There have been cases where babies have survived this abortion and the babies were delivered with scalded skin and lungs. This procedure is rarely performed because of the risks to the mother.

Dilation and Extraction- This type of procedure is called a partial birth abortion because it is performed late in a pregnancy. The doctor uses forceps to grab the baby’s legs, delivering the legs while the head remains inside the uterus. Scissors are then used to pierce the baby’s brain and a suction is used to remove the baby’s brain. The baby is then delivered. United States laws prohibit doctors from performing partial-birth abortions due to the barbaric nature of the procedure. However, doctors can get around this law by first injecting the fetus with a drug that stops the heart.

Dilation and Evacuation- This type of procedure is usually performed 13-20 weeks of pregnancy but can be used up to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Forceps are used to rip apart the limbs from the baby and the parts are removed. Sometimes the baby’s head is crushed to allow it to be removed more easily.

Intracardiac Injection Abortion- In this type of abortion, a needle is placed directly into the baby’s heart and an injection of either potassium chloride or digoxin is given to the fetus to stop the heart from beating. The injection essentially causes a heart attack. This type of abortion is typically used in the case of multiple fetuses to reduce the number of babies in one pregnancy. This is typically performed between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Dilation and Curettage- This procedure is used in the first trimester to remove the fetus by scraping the walls of the uterus. The arms and limbs are dismembered from the body. This type of abortion should not be confused with a dilation and curettage that is performed after a natural miscarriage to remove the dead fetus if the body has not properly expelled the fetus and placenta.

Suction Aspiration (Vacuum)- This is the most common type of abortion performed, between 6 and 12 weeks, but up to 16 weeks. The body of the fetus is torn apart when a sharp-tipped tube is inserted into the uterus. The fetal parts are then suctioned out.

Abortion websites leave out what actually happens to the fetus during an abortion. These websites claim that the fetus cannot feel pain; however, scientists now know that a fetus can feel pain in utero. Sonograms performed during abortions have shown that babies curl up and flinch and will try to move away from the instruments used during abortions. The nervous system and brain structures necessary to feel pain are in place by the time an abortion is done. There have also been cases were abortions were unsuccessful and babies were delivered alive and left to die on a table, cold and alone.

Abortion is not painless—to the mother or to the fetus. There is always physical pain and many times emotional scars as well. I personally know of several women who have had abortions who now regret killing their child. There are reasons why women cannot raise their children, and that is understandable. But being an adoptive mother myself, I can attest to the fact that there are many people who would love to adopt these babies.

Another argument that is brought up by fathers is that they have no say in what happens to their unborn child. Laws in the United States protect the mother, but not the father. Always consult the father of your unborn baby before considering an abortion. And mostly, please consider the amount of pain abortion has on your unborn baby. Can you imagine having your skin and lungs scalded from saline, or a massive needle piercing from your skin to your heart, or what about having your brain pierced and sucked out, your limbs torn from your body. All of this without pain medication? A baby’s heart begins to beat before a mother even knows that she’s pregnant. That living, breathing baby deserves to be treated as a human being.

Going through a crisis pregnancy can be scary. Knowing where to turn can be even scarier. Abortion providers advertise free abortion consultations. But a consultation of this magnitude should give full disclosure so that pregnant women can make an informed decision. Let’s look at abortion consultations at abortion clinics vs. consultations given by pregnancy resource centers (aka. crisis pregnancy centers).

Abortion Clinic Consultations <div id="ad_pos_content_a"

An abortion consultation is a brief meeting where a pregnant woman is given certain information about her pregnancy and different types of abortions. This may include a pregnancy test; an ultrasound; an STD test; and abortion education. In rare cases, a pamphlet on adoption may be handed out. Unfortunately, not all abortion clinics show the results of an ultrasound. What these consultations neglect to contain is a thoughtful conversation on any other option other than abortions. That’s where pregnancy resource centers come in.

Pregnancy Resource Center Consultations

A Pregnancy Resource Center, also known as a Crisis Pregnancy Center, gives full disclosure as to possible side effects of abortion, Post-Abortion Syndrome, and possible complications of abortion. Their services are all free of charge and they do not take any government funding. Some pregnancy resource centers may be faith-based, but you do not have to be religious to receive their services.

Pregnancy resource centers focus on the pregnant woman as well as their unborn child. Some of their services may include free pregnancy tests, parenting classes, prenatal development classes, counseling, life coaching and free supplies such as diapers, baby wipes, etc. They may also provide housing if needed. These centers give you full information on what to expect in labor and delivery and beyond. These centers respect you as a person and will be there for you regardless of what you decide to do. They may even provide post-abortion counseling if needed. Some centers have programs for fathers as well.

There is no way to know what is best for you until you are presented with all the choices. Seeing your ultrasound, discussing the option of choosing to parent your baby, placing your child for adoption, and learning more about the consequences of abortion are all important information you need when faced with a crisis pregnancy. Having a well-rounded knowledge of their options is empowering to women. A true consultation will give the pros and cons to both sides. Wouldn’t you want to know everything before making the biggest decision of your life?

Are you considering placing a child for adoption? Do you want more choices with your adoption plan? Do you want to regain more control in your life? Visit Adoption.org or call 1-800-ADOPT-98. We can help you put together an adoption plan that best meets your needs.

Every time you go in to have a medical procedure, they ask you to sign a consent form stating that you have been informed of any risks associated with the procedure and what physicians will be performing the procedure. This states that you give consent to the physician to perform the procedure and your decision is voluntary. In some states, informed consent laws require that a woman seeking an elective abortion receive information from the provider about alternatives, her legal rights, available public and private assistance and other information. <div id="ad_pos_content_a"

Since abortion is a medical procedure, whether it is performed surgically or using medication, you will have to sign a consent form. An abortion consent form is very similar to other consent forms, but there are a few things that are added to it. On an abortion consent form, it states that you have been informed of abortion alternatives. It also includes information regarding your having been given the gestational age of the fetus, had the opportunity to see it on an ultrasound and hear the heartbeat. By signing the consent form, you acknowledge that all of these things were provided to you prior to having the abortion.

By law, providers must provide you with this information prior to you getting an abortion. They give you this information so that you can make an informed decision. It’s important to know alternatives and any medical risks associated with the procedure. You will sign the form along with a parent or guardian if you are a minor, a physician who provided the information, and the physician who performs the abortion. You must sign the form in order to have the procedure performed. You can find forms online by state. Each form looks different, but they all say the same thing. Check with your physician for your form. This is especially true when making the decision to have an abortion.

Here are 5 cons of having an abortion that are important for everyone to know about.

Abortions involve side effects, just like any other procedure Even though legal abortions are generally safe, these side effects may include pain, discomfort, bleeding, infection, and in some cases, injury to internal organs or reactions to the medication. It is rare for a woman to have these symptoms, but they do happen. It’s important to talk to your doctor to know what to expect during and after an abortion.

Abortions cost money. Like everything else in the medical world, abortions are not free and they cost a lot of money. They can range from $500 to several thousands of dollars. If you have health insurance, an abortion won’t be covered by insurance, which means you will have to pay out of pocket. This can be pretty expensive.

There may be psychological side effects. While it is not an official diagnosis, there is a syndrome called post-abortion syndrome. You may experience depression, anxiety, uncontrollable mood swings, and even thoughts of suicide. Some women might even turn to drugs and alcohol. It’s important to think about these things as you make your final decision.

In some states, you must have parental consent. If you are a young woman who is facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be considering abortion because you don’t want your parents to know. In some states, you may have to have your parents’ consent before getting an abortion. While this is a hard fact to face, it is also inevitable.

You must make the decision early in pregnancy. Most abortions are performed during the first trimester because medical risks are higher if performed later in the pregnancy. It is hard to even find abortion services during your second trimester. This means that you must learn of your unplanned pregnancy early on and make the decision in the first few months. These time constraints rush women into a decision that they may later regret.

You may be facing an unplanned pregnancy and are puzzled about what to do, but researching your options and weighing the pros and cons before coming to a final decision is important. Abortion isn’t for everyone, talk to family members and to your doctor.
We waited almost six years to get that magical call from our social worker. I can remember it like it was yesterday. She called while I was at work, and I sat down in our waiting room chair and cried while she proceeded to tell me that a birth mother had contacted her and wanted to meet for dinner the following week. The speed of this meeting was just what we imagined, except for the fact that she was only 19 weeks pregnant. That is not what we expected at all, remember, we thought we would have only weeks to prepare for baby. Now we would have months to prepare for a baby! But that also meant we would have months to get to know this woman who was carrying the baby that was going to be ours.

After the initial shock of not getting what we expected (a short pregnancy), we realized there is great beauty in the unexpected. We first met our son’s birth mom at an Olive Garden with our social worker. There we spent hours getting to know her, even after our social worker left. Then we spent the next 20 weeks getting to know her even more. Our families went to the zoo together. Our families waited in the waiting room while our son was born. Our families celebrated our son’s dedication for our church together. Our families have spent birthdays and Christmases together. Our families have spent weekends camping together.

When we expected a short pregnancy, we also expected a short relationship with our child’s birth family. We may have also been shortsighted at the time and only wanted what was best for US, not our child. I was even a little leery about the whole open adoption thing at first. I was scared she would want to make decisions for him. I was scared she would want to be more involved. And if I am being completely honest with you, I was scared she would want to take him away from us. All those things I was scared of, I embrace now. I call, text, email our son’s birth mom on a regular basis, asking for her opinion on this, that, or the next thing. I have cried out in frustration to her when I’m at my wits end with our child’s behavior. I have cried tears of joy with her when he has excelled at something.

In fact, almost one year ago, I got the idea to start a blog about our open adoption journey. And much to my delight, she has joined forces with me on the blog, and we share in this parenting journey together. It wasn’t too long after I got to know her that I realized I didn’t just love the fact that she was going to give us a child. I loved her. And over the course of the last four years, she has become one of my dearest and closest friends. Not because she made me a mom, but because she has made me a better person in knowing her.

We didn’t just adopt our son, we adopted his whole birth family, and they adopted us.

However, some of the physical symptoms to an abortion can include injury to the uterus, bleeding, infections, adhesion in the abdomen, disruptions in menstruation, and even infertility. Some women may even experience high-risk pregnancies later with a greater chance of miscarriage and premature births. Some of the psychosomatic symptoms include functional abdominal troubles, functional sexual disorders, migraines, and sleep disturbances.

Nevertheless, there are a multitude of psychological symptoms. Some of the major ones include depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, severe mood swings, self-aggression, and medicine, drug or alcohol abuse.

Abortion is a very heated debate topic these days. The country is almost split 50/50, pro-life/pro-choice. On the one side, pro-choice advocates believe that the fetus is part of the woman’s body and has the right to choose. On the other side, conservatives believe the fetus is a baby and is fully deserves life. Below, I’ve articulated 10 conservative views that I have regarding abortion.

1. Life Begins at Conception

Scientifically, an unborn baby has brain waves at seven weeks, a heartbeat at seven weeks, and can feel pain at 20 weeks.* Most abortions are at 7-20 weeks. My question is this: if a person is considered dead with no brain waves and no heartbeat, why isn’t he considered alive with a brainwave and a heartbeat??

2. The Unborn Have Human Rights, Too.

The right to life also applies to the unborn. The founding fathers believed every man had the unalienable right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Why wouldn’t this apply to a fetus?

3. Fetuses ARE Children.

The word “fetus” simply means “child” in Latin. She is human. Just because the word is different doesn’t mean she is any less a child. Just because the fetus looks different, just because we can’t see the fetus, just because the fetus is in a different location, just because the fetus is in an early stage of development, doesn’t make the fetus any less of a child. If we were to take a DNA sample of a fetus, it would be determined that the fetus is, indeed, human. A person. Doesn’t she deserve to live?

4. Adoption Is a Beautiful Option.

The care for children doesn’t end when a child is born. Many people have chosen to adopt babies from women with crisis pregnancies. Adoption is the perfect alternative to abortion because it helps three people: 1) The pregnant woman who may be experiencing a crisis pregnancy; 2) the adoptive mom, who may be experiencing infertility and, of course, 3) the child. There are about one million parents waiting to adopt in the U.S. and over one million children who are aborted every year. Wouldn’t adoption be the perfect choice? *

5. Children Are a Blessing!

The vast majority of women who obtain abortions do so as a form of birth control. They do so with the belief that the child may interfere with their career or relationship. Children are a blessing. They teach us how to be selfless. They teach us how to love unconditionally. They give us a new perspective on the world. They are gifts, not curses. They have a purpose. They are not mistakes. And they can be a joy, not a burden.

6. ALL Children Are a Blessing!

That’s not a typo. Just because a child may be born with a disability doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t deserve to live. “Quality of life” does not determine a child’s value. Kids with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or other disabilities can lead a fulfilling, productive life. Who are we to say that simply because a doctor gives us a dire prognosis, that we can predict what type of life that person will lead?

7. Parental Notification Is a Parental Right

Less than 1% of all abortions take place due to rape* or incest. Yet, a 12-year-old can get an abortion without her parent’s knowledge. Incest with a minor is a horrible crime and should be reported as such. But performing secret abortions for minor teens simply because she does not want her dad to know is wrong on so many levels. Doesn’t a parent, who has committed no crime, have a right to know what is going on with his or her child?

8. Sex Crimes Are Crimes

Rape* and other sex crimes are illegal. Yet, many of these crimes go unreported at many abortion clinics. Sex crimes are wrong, and the answer is not abortion. The answer is holding the perpetrator accountable. Without notifying the authorities, the victim can continue to be perpetrated. Abortion for a sex crime victim creates two victims: the woman and the baby. What crime did the baby ever commit to deserve such a fate?

9. Courts Should Not Legislate from the Bench.

The Supreme Court is not infallible. They have been wrong before, and they were wrong in the case of Roe vs. Wade in 1973. For example, in 1857, in the landmark Dred Scott* case, the Supreme Court justified slavery, declaring that blacks were not “persons.” The same type of rhetoric is now used to justify abortion: that the unborn are not persons. They are not self-aware. That they are not sentient beings, and therefore, do not deserve to live. My question is the following: are they any more self-aware, the minute after they are born?

10. God Knows When Life Begins and Ends.

You don’t need to be “religious” to believe abortion is wrong. But, if you do believe in God, my question to you is if life doesn’t begin at conception, when does it start? And how do you know? Would God know?

The issue of abortion is really not about Democrat vs. Republican or liberal vs. conservative. It’s about life vs. death. It is an important decision that should not be made lightly because it is permanent and will be the most important choice of a person’s life.

When an unplanned pregnancy occurs, the first question often asked is, “What are you going to do?” This question typically implies the question, “Are you going to parent or are you going to terminate the pregnancy?” Why is adoption not implied in this scenario? What is it about adoption that makes it not a first choice when an unplanned pregnancy occurs? This question has a lot to do with the process of adoption and the unknowns that come with adoption.

Adoption is not often suggested as a response to unplanned pregnancy for three reasons:

1. Adoption means going through an entire pregnancy.

Unplanned pregnancies more often than not are also unwanted pregnancies. The issue here is not only the idea of parenting a child, but the turmoil that might result from going through a pregnancy. The mother would have to tell her family and friends about the pregnancy. She would have to go through all of the ins and outs of a pregnancy, including the medical inconveniences that might affect employment. Those that she would have to tell may have opinions on the topic that are unwanted. The mother may also not want the father to know she is pregnant. In essence, adoption would mean giving up nine months of her life and is not fathomable to some as a realistic option.

2. The idea of adoption can be heartbreaking.

Even if a pregnancy is not planned, the idea of placing a child once a mother has carried her for nine months can be heartbreaking. Many cannot fathom experiencing that bond, going through birth, and placing that child. Many do not suggest adoption because they cannot understand the ins and outs of adoption and the options for openness in adoption. Adoption can be heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. However, suggesting adoption as an option takes understanding the options adoption allows.

3. Many people simply do not know enough about adoption.

Adoption has become more accepted throughout the years, however there are still many misconceptions about adoption. People are often scared of the unknowns in adoption. People do not suggest the adoption option because they often do not know anyone who has made that choice. Many have only seen adoption portrayed in the media, which is often in a tragic manner. Parenting is something we see every day. Abortion is a very straightforward result and is an option with consequences that are “out of sight, out of mind.” Adoption would be more often suggested if the population were more educated on all that adoption can be.

These are five things you’ll feel in an unplanned pregnancy.

On December 15 of 2014, I sat in my bathroom and stared at a positive pregnancy test. My head and my stomach started to throb, and slight melodrama aside, I thought I was going to die. So much had happened in the last few months, and I did not have the skills or the desire to deal with something bigger than me, something life-changing. While I was feeling so much, the five feelings I could most clearly identify were shock, fear, denial, anger, and acceptance of my unplanned pregnancy.

1. Shock

The first emotion that stifled me for days was shock. How could this be possible? I felt like a child and somehow I was growing one inside me as well. It didn’t feel real, there was no way it could be real. Part of me hoped that the home test was a fluke and that when I took one administered by a doctor it would be different and I wouldn’t be in charge of anyone’s future.

2. Fear

The fear I felt about the situation was overwhelming. I was afraid of telling my boyfriend, of telling my family, of ruining this child’s future in any way. The night of that positive pregnancy test, I didn’t sleep because I was so consumed by fear. I waited until Michael got home from work and as soon as I saw him began to sob. After the initial fear of telling people subsided, the fear of making the wrong choice kept at me and sent my anxiety sky high. It is a truly scary thing to get pregnant when you aren’t ready to be, because it isn’t just about you and what you may or may not want.

3. Denial

Oh denial, my old friend. How I used you so often then. In association with my shock, I was also in denial, trying to convince myself that none of this was real, it was simply a dream I would wake from. When indeed it wasn’t, the denial of telling myself it was a good thing that I was pregnant, that parenting this child was something that I could do, that maybe this is just how life was supposed to work out. When that denial faded, I worked to convince myself that once I got through with this pregnancy and went through with the adoption plan, I could return to life as normal, that grief wouldn’t be so hard, that I would just be okay. Deny, deny, deny. It helps no one in the long run, but at times during my unplanned pregnancy, denial was almost a saving grace.

4. Anger

I had always considered myself a careful person when it came to sex and the use of birth control. So believe me when I say that I was so angry at myself for “allowing this to happen.” I was angry because I felt guilt and I felt shame. I was angry because my decisions had affected the lives of others. I was also angry that I was staring motherhood in the face, growing this exquisite life inside of me, and I wasn’t ready and it wasn’t my time, that I wouldn’t have been the mom I wanted to be for him.

5. Acceptance of the Situation

Acceptance is slow and hard. Accepting that I was facing an unplanned pregnancy, that I had to make a choice, and that I may struggle with the choice made, etc. took time and persistent personal work. I accepted that we needed to make an adoption plan and did my very best to make sure that he had the best parents I could find.

When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, it can be difficult to not allow your emotions to dictate the outcome. While you should embrace and explore your feelings, try to make sure you have the clearest head possible when trying to make choices. Don’t allow others to pressure you or warp the situation further. Find a friend or a counselor to help when it is all too much. At the end of the day, remember that whatever you choose, it is your choice as to what happens to you and your baby.

Why do women choose to end a pregnancy versus choosing other alternatives, such as adoption? With so much information available, it tends to fill my head with even more questions. What social and economic influences factor into that decision? Why do women choose to end a pregnancy versus choosing other alternatives, such as adoption? With so much information available, it tends to fill my head with even more questions. While searching for answers to questions that I had regarding abortion I compiled a list of ten jaw-dropping facts about abortion.

Approximately 37.4% of all New York City pregnancies in 2013 ended in abortion. That number is staggering considering the size of the city. There were 235,274 live births recorded in New York City for that same year. That’s nearly 88,000 abortions that took place in NYC in 2013.

Forty percent of underage women having abortions report that neither parent knew of their abortion. Only 21 states require parental consent from either one, or both, parents. Thirty-eight states require knowledge and involvement from parents for minor abortions.

In the year 2013 the abortion industry reported a $2.1 billion dollar revenue. It reported a $147.8 million dollar profit.

The abortion rate of women on government assisted healthcare, or Medicaid, was reported as three times higher than other groups of women. It was reported that abortions were covered in some states under Obamacare, covering abortions on demand other than rape, incest, or life of mother as reason for abortion.

Fifty-nine percent of women reporting abortions in 2014 also reported having had one, or more, previous births.

Of all reported abortions, 86% are procured by unmarried women.

Fifty-one percent of women reporting abortion in 2008 were using contraceptive methods during conception.

Forty-nine percent of American adults polled considered abortion to be morally unethical, while 23% did not consider abortion to be a moral issue.

Only 1% of reported abortions were survivors of rape. It is also reported that approximately 32,000 pregnancies are reported due to rape each year with 50% of those pregnancies ending in abortion.

It was reported that there were 17.3 infant adoptions per every 1,000 abortions in 2014. That’s 4.6 adoptions per 1000 live births in that same year.

The numbers are staggering. However, it is reported that the number of abortions performed declines each year, and continues at a steady rate. This could be due to a myriad of factors, including more dependable contraceptives, moral/ethical reasons, or an ever changing social acceptance.
